Can oil paints be used on watercolor paper?
I'd like to use my oil paints for a recently assigned art project, but I have no canvas. All I have left is heavyweight watercolor paper. Will that do?
You can use watercolor paper if you choose. However, canvas allows the oils to breath. An oil painting dries from the outside in. It takes on average around ten to twenty years for an oil painting to completely dry.
Have you ever looked at the back of a really old oil painting? If the artwork is framed it has a protective paper sheet attached to it (a brown, black or white piece of stock paper). It's not uncommon for a picture framer to cut a square breathing hole into that protective sleeve, this allows the painting to breath from both sides.
If this painting is one that you're going to keep I would suggest you pick-up a inexpensive canvas. You can normally find one at a Micheal's, Aaron brother's or local craft store fairly cheap. I hope this helps you. ♥
