Easel Oil
I want to take up painting and drawing?
What are some materials I need to start. What materials do I need to take up drawing, (in pencil/charcoal)? (the kind of pencils, tools, paper...etc), and painting, (oil based paints, an easel...)? It would be nice if you could tell me what product/brand I should use. This is all on a budget and I am new to this, so links would be nice. Any recommendations for good quality starter kits would be nice. Thanks.
You may want to start with just one or the other (drawing and painting, that is), as there is quite a lot to learn in both - I would start with drawing, which is about skills you need for both, and then begin on painting when you are comfortable enough with your drawing level to start painting your drawings. Of course, you can do both at once if that's what you want to do, but I would find it easier that way myself.
The answer above covered basic materials well, so I'm just going to add that I'd also suggest some learning materials - some books on your favourite drawing or painting subjects are really invaluable when you are starting out, and should give you a thorough explanation of the kind of materials that may be useful for you. Different kinds of paint are very different to use, so if you have the chance to try them out before you splash out on a set, it would be very wise to do so, but I second the acrylics over oils motion. I prefer watercolour myself, so I'm not very knowledgeable about oil-based paints - but I will direct you to this website, too, since it's another place with good lessons. http://www.simplypainting.com/
