Plastic Paint

Is theere a way to paint plastic without the paint peeling off?
I am re-doing my dads old acoustic guitar and it has a picguard on it that is plastic. I want to paint the pic guard black but poeple say the paint will just peel off over time. Is there a way that I can paint it without the paint peeling off?
Another option would be to take the guitar to a guitar store and have them replace the pic guard. This would be more aesthetically pleasing.
