Kit Hobby

Can anyone recommend the starting "kit" I will need to begin dressmaking?
I am starting dressmaking as a new hobby, I have a sewing machine so far but need to get some more bits and pieces before I can start properly. Can anyone recommend what I need? Books, materials etc?
I am planning to start a night course in September, but for the time being I want to get started!
You will need a pattern. It will have a list of the fabric and notions to go with it. Besides the pattern, get scissors that will only be used for fabric; some straight pins; and a seam ripper.
Don't buy any other tools until you need them.
