Ivory Black

How can Black and white not be colors?
I hear it time and again...black is only the absence of light, white is the absence of color.
Yet browsing the shelves of any art materials store we are spoiled for choice...Titanium white, brilliant white, zinc white, then the blacks, Ivory black, lamp black, jet black and just plain black.
If I have a need to choose as I often do with blacks, then surely colors they are?
Some say black should not be on the palate, I bet I ignore them......your thoughts please!
Black and white are colors, sometimes. The "absence of color" reference is describing a true concept, however, when it comes to the application of color black and white are colors. You have to consider two separate ways in which color exists in reality. There is physical substance (matter) and there is light. Truly, the absence of all color in light is no light at all.......absolute darkness. White is the combination of all color. Light is what is termed additive color. This refers to the manner in which white is achieved. A prism breaks up the light and exposes the spectrum that it is made up of. White in light is all color combined. You must also realize that light is emitted and perceived with the eyes and interpreted by the brain differently.
With matter, color is perceived when light waves are reflected off a physical surface. In theory, black would be all colors mixed but you can't mix pigments this purely because there are no pure pigments. Matter is subtractive color in that you subtract color to create white. People have been working at developing pure pigments for printing for years. Some colors are close but close is still not enough. The materials used to make white and black pigments have color to them. They are tinted and lean in different directions depending on the specific pigment. There are whites that are on the blue or yellow side of the spectrum. There are blacks that are on the red or blue side of the spectrum. When it comes to practical application, using pigment to create color, white and black are as much a color as any other pigment. With all dark colors, adding a tiny amount of white exposes more of the tint and which direction it leans towards. A black might actually be orange, blue, red or green but it works as a black in certain contexts.
These terms are used to describe black or white under certain circumstances that may be technically correct and incorrect depending on how you look at them. You have to understand people are often unaware of the difference; light and matter have a separate set of their own rules. It is common for people to think only of those that apply to light because that is what computers use. It is only when the images that appear using light (graphic image files) are converted to matter (photographic prints or even painted in paintings) that we look for adequate representations of the visible color spectrum in pigment. The truth is that all pigment is only a representation of light waves. We look for a substance to depict a blue, for instance, and whatever we use it is an illusion that works within a restricted application. That pigment, especially in the case of white or black, is not pure and it only mimics what we are trying to represent in nature.
You don't just hear gospel music, you feel it.
At the heights of its power, this uniquely American art form connects the spirit of the writer, performer and listener with a truth much higher than presents travails...

"Me beefcake. You bossy." That kind of sums up the dynamics of 1932's Tarzan, the Ape Man, which stars an incredibly hulking Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan and Maureen O'Sullivan as the gorgeous accidental feminist who finds true love with you-know-who in the jungle...
