Framing Art

Is it proper to use a mat when framing fabric art?
ie. quilts or appliqued pictures
If you don't use matting, do use some kind of spacer to keep the glass away from the fabric. I have a professionally-framed antique silk scarf. they sewed it to fabric and then used little cardboard chips, acid-free, to hold the glass away. You can't see the chips.
