Chalk Pastels
how can I fix chalk pastel on canvas?
I have created a painting using acrylic paint overlaid with pastel. If you know how I can fix the pastel please let me know. I dont know if fixative spray is appropriate on canvas or acrylic or if theres some other way, thanks.
Be sure that the paint is TOTALLY dry, even if it's slightly wet when you dom the pastel chalk overlay. Then put a good acrylic spray over the whole painting (not just over and around the pastel chalk). This will form an 'invisible layer' on the whole painting, and fix the chalk. If you applied the overlay just around the chalk it could curl up at the edges and begin to peel off. By spraying the whole canvas, you are forming a 'layer' that 'wraps around' the canvas slightly and won't begin to peel off. I know this because I've done paintings with chalk overlays, and because my husband does torn paper pieces over paintings, and also does chalk and pencil (both of which need to be 'fixed' and uses the 'spray fixative' method to 'hold' the lines of everything, paper, chalk, and pencil.
